On-call rotation calculator

How many humans do you need for a sustainable rotation? Plug in the numbers.

About this tool

Enter your weekly page volume, the team size, the shift length, and the most pages per person per week you'll tolerate. It tells you whether the rotation is sustainable and how many people it would take to make it so.

Good for

  • Making the headcount case for an on-call rotation with numbers rather than vibes
  • Seeing what halving alert noise does to the load on each person
  • Comparing shift lengths before you change the rota

Not for

  • Real rotas: it assumes pages arrive evenly, and ignores holidays, sickness, and follow-the-sun handovers
  • Measuring how hard pages are: one 3am SEV1 isn't the same as two flappy disk alerts
